Google Maps is handy navigation, route finding and location tool for Android and iPhone. If necessary, you can download maps of your chosen area for offline use without Internet access, where it is either too expensive or the network is simply unavailable.

This simple instruction on downloading offline Google maps to your device, as well as one additional method of using maps (also from Google) without the Internet, which few people know about.

Important Note: areas of the map that are viewed are cached on your device without any action, however, if you use any “Memory Cleanup” utilities, they can erase this information, and possibly other useful data.

How to download Google maps for offline use

The procedure for downloading Google maps on an Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad is very simple and consists of the following steps:

  1. In the Google Maps application, open the menu and select “Offline Maps.”
  2. Click “Select Card.”
  3. Select the area on the map (you can increase and decrease it) that you need to download for offline use and click the “Download” button.
  4. Wait for the download to complete.
  5. If the area of the map you need is too large to fit in an offline map, simply repeat the same steps with the other parts of the area you need.

This is ready: the map is downloaded and stored on your mobile device and it can be viewed and used, including without an Internet connection.

Please note: for offline maps, not all functions are available – routes are drawn only for cars (if you choose public transport, a bicycle or a walking route, it will not be laid), and the saved view is only a regular map (satellite view can be added to the cache if use it in this area with Internet access).

Google My Maps

Not everyone knows, but Google has another useful official application available on the Play Store – My Maps. Using it, you can create your own maps based on Google maps, marking them important places for you, drawing routes, choosing your preferred view (Map, Satellite, Relief).

Despite the fact that offline maps have not been downloaded in the application, sections of the map with your marks and notes, as well as with the surrounding territory, are stored on your device (provided that you do not clear the memory), i.e. available for use without an internet connection.

In some cases, when it’s not about traveling to other countries and searching for shops and restaurants, but about hiking, this map option, given the possibility of creating your own facilities, maybe more convenient.

Well, of course, there are other navigation applications that are not based on Google Maps, “sharpened” specifically for offline use.
